BC High School Football Looking for Therapists!!!
This is Ashley Cornish and Dave Adolph, last year we assisted High School Football BC to get Athletic Therapy coverage for their games to ensure player safety and proper concussion management. The main objective for us is to increase the relationship between ATABC and Football BC and to broaden the exposure of Athletic Therapy in the Lower Mainland & BC. Last year was a trial year for this partnership and we believe we had some success, but need more help to make this a successful partnership. That is why we (or really Football BC) needs you!!
Starting in the 2010 fall season there was a mandate by the BC High School Football Board Members for each team during a game to have a "health care professional" on the sidelines to care for all injuries, particularly concussions, to adhere to the new concussion guidelines. The health care professional is stated to cover all spectrums of the field from paramedics, nurses, firemen to even coaches that take a brief "concussion course”. After last year’s experience when coaches who took this “concussion course” , there was some realization that being a coach & “health care professional” was too much work and they started to appreciate that athletic therapy coverage is more beneficial.
There was great coverage last year by many Certified Athletic Therapists and Certification Candidates, and this year we are looking for more Athletic Therapists for the football coverage for the upcoming Fall 2011 season. There is a wide range of teams across BC that need our help, from Abbotsford to Vancouver, on the Islandfrom Victoria to Nanaimo and sometimes going into the Okanagan.
This is a great opportunity for paid work and experience for Athletic Therapists, Newly certified therapists and certification candidates. This is a great occasion to get paid work as many clubs play multiple games on the same day and more importantly, a great opportunity for networking and to enhance your referral base of your clinical practice. Coverage has been established for Certified Athletic Therapists at $70 per game and $55 per game for Certification Candidates.
Coverage for local senior boys teams is a priority, but many clubs are needing coverage for junior boys and Gr. 8 games. Most Senior games are on Fridays and Saturdays, but other teams also have games from Tues-Thurs, depending on the team. From last year’s experience, most games during the week are around 3pm or shortly after and even into the evening and Saturdays’ around noon. If teams do not have their required “health care professional” on the sidelines, they have to forfeit the game!
If you are interested in working some football games, we would like for you to email us and please specify in which areas you could work (ie. North Shore,Abbotsford, Victoria, etc). If you are interested, but feel there is an obstacle to your commitment, please let us know, as it could be something that needs to change to improve coverage enthusiasm!
We will be in touch shortly when schedules start to be announced and we look forward to being the bridge of Athletic Therapists with Football BC, as we all know that athlete safety is the number one priority.
Thanks
Ashley & Dave

From TC sports section June 14th:
Former hurdles world champion Perdita Felicien and the burly shot putter Dylan Armstrong will headline the inaugural season of the National Track League, which includes the Victoria International Classic on July 3 at Centennial Stadium.
A new concept for Canadian track and field, the NTL opens June 29 in Edmonton followed by the Harry Jerome meet July 1 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, the Victoria meet two days later, the Aileen Meagher Classic July 10 in Halifax and the Toronto International July 13.
Brent Fougner, director of the Victoria International Classic, said many of the athletes who would normally head overseas to compete in Europe are staying in North America this summer because of the NTL.
He is predicting one of the strongest fields in the history of the Victoria meet, an annual fixture since 1988, and now folded into the NTL.
Challenging Felicien in the women’s hurdles will be two-time Olympian Angela Whyte of Edmonton, medallist at the 2007 Rio Pan American Games and 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Armstrong, from Kamloops, was fourth by an eyelash in the shot put at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics before taking gold two years later at Delhi in the Commonwealth Games.
Heptathlete Jessica Zelenka of Calgary, who also had a close call in Beijing with a fifth-place finish before winning silver at Delhi, will also be competing in the Victoria meet. She appears on track for London 2012 after taking time off to have a baby between the Beijing and Delhi Games.
Top 800-metre runners entered include Americans Khadevis Robinson, recent winner in the prestigious Diamond League meet at Rome, and Lemlem Ogbasillasie.
Other elite competitors will be announced over the coming weeks.
The athletes are gunning for this year’s biggest event — the IAAF 2011 world track and field championships in August at South Korea.
